The Global Learning Hub is committed to promoting global learning opportunities for LGBTQIA+ students. Participation in global learning can be a great way to explore a passion, advance your academic/personal plans, enhance your resume, and connect with global communities. It can also be an opportunity to explore how LGBTQIA+ identities are perceived and experienced in varying or similar global learning environments.

The Global Learning Hub has partnered with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Resource Center to provide support and resources for LGBTQIA+ students participating in global learning opportunities.

Before you decide on a global learning opportunity, research potential challenges and consider what support is available in that global learning environment. Generally, acceptance and support of LGBTQIA+ issues is increasing in the U.S. and abroad, but intolerance still exists in laws, cultures and individuals. For a more positive and safe experience, research the following questions:

  • What is the acceptance level in the location you are interested in?
  • What are the local laws and customs regarding the LGBTQIA+ community?
  • Are there particular cultural norms or expected behaviors?
  • What resources and support are available in the location you are interested in?

Funding Opportunity—Global Aggies Award for LGBTQIA Rights

The Global Aggies Award for LGBTQIA+ Rights encourages and supports UC Davis student global learning and engagement regarding the issues that LGBTQIA+ communities and individuals face around the world. This award provides students with funding to learn about and advance LGBTQIA+ wellbeing and rights globally, including through international, USA-based, or virtual activity. Multiple grants awarded, ranging from $500 to $2,500.

Students of Color

Global learning opportunities can be a chance to explore how racial and ethnic identities are perceived and experienced in various global contexts. Global Learning Hub staff are here to support students of color when preparing for their global learning experiences and learning about the cultural and social climate of their new global learning environment.

First Generation Students 

The Global Learning Hub offers many opportunities for First Generation students to engage in global learning in the U.S. and abroad. Our staff are dedicated to guiding First Generation students in successfully achieving their personal, academic, and career goals.

The Global Learning Hub is committed to making global learning opportunities a positive and safe experience for LGBTQIA+ students. Our staff can assist in providing support and resources so LGBTQIA+ students can make informed decisions regarding their global learning experiences.

Undocumented and Immigrant Students

Our staff at the Global Learning Hub can direct undocumented and immigrant students who are interested in global learning opportunities to resources available on campus, as well as provide support when determining program options.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities can and do participate in global learning opportunities. Staff at the Global Learning Hub can confidentially assist you in identifying the availability of academic accommodations and accessible facilities at various global learning sites.

Transfer and Reentry Students

Transfer and reentry students are encouraged to engage in global learning opportunities no matter the age, major, marital/partner status or financial situation. The Global Learning Hub is committed to supporting transfer and reentry students in achieving their global learning goals.

Culture and Identity

As you explore, observe, participate, and expand your world views, it’s important to recognize that elements of culture influence who we are and how we relate to the world around us. Prepare yourself for cultural differences and similarities by exploring your own identity and cultural values as well as investigating the practices, norms, and values of your host culture.
