University of California (UC) Summer Abroad

UC Faculty-led Summer Abroad and Internship Programs—2023

UC faculty-led Summer Abroad and Internship programs offer students short, intensive academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of excursions and cultural activities. All UC programs are built around UC courses and are led by world-class UC faculty, administered by a UC campus. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Class sizes are small—18-30 students—allowing for an intimate learning experience. UC Summer Abroad and Internship programs are open to all University of California students and students from other U.S. institutions.

Africa and the Middle East

Ghana Pan Afrikan Social Movements: Past, Present and Future (UC Berkeley)

Explore histories of Pan Afrikan Social Movements using the Ghanaian Independence Movement as a case study. Hear from leading scholars in Ghana, meet with community based organizations, and learn from culture-bearers in this dynamic and immersive program. 

Ghana – Pediatric Care and Reproductive Health (UC Davis)

Join local medical professionals in the historic Children's Hospital and see how these professionals provide care in a resource-scarce environment.

South Africa Change in Modern South Africa (UC San Diego)

The Global Seminar offers an ideal environment for students to combine a deep acquaintance with South African history with a well-structured sojourn into the cultural life of a sophisticated African city.  This Global Seminar therefore presents the city as a living embodiment of complex post-Apartheid South Africa.

South Africa Evolution and Fish Biology (UC Santa Cruz) 

Embark on an evolutionary expedition in South Africa, where students snorkel at Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and conduct hands-on fieldwork at the "Cradle of Humankind", where early human fossils were first uncovered. 

South Africa – Hospital Medicine and Health Disparities (UC Davis)

Witness local healthcare professionals' efforts to address health inequities amongst underserved communities in Cape Town through community-based initiatives and clinical rotations.

Spain & Morocco –  Muslim Granada and Its Legacy in Spain and Morocco (UC Santa Cruz)  

Journey through Spain and Morocco for a deep dive into how these cultures inform each other. Both countries are home to striking and rich cultures, which are starkly different from each other linguistically and religiously, yet share a variety of patterns and forms. 

Uganda – One Health Uganda (UC Davis)

Study global "One Health" issues connected to human, livestock and wildlife interaction in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Australia – Animal and Zoological Management (UC Davis) 

This program, in partnership with Loop Abroad, provides students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience working in wildlife handling and care at a wildlife conservation center and internship at a zoo.

Bhutan  GIS in the Land of the Thunder Dragon (UC Davis)

This program integrates two upper division courses to create a program introducing students to what it's like to create or work at an early stage startup. The students will learn about everything necessary to create and deploy modern web sites and services including tools, frameworks, patterns, and methods.

New Zealand – Environment, Green Tech, and Sustainability Internships (UC Davis)

Intern in the fields of environmental science, green technology, and sustainability in New Zealand, where their history is built on respect for the environment.

New Zealand  Psychology Internships (UC Davis)

Intern in Auckland or Wellington gaining experience in the fields of psychology and social work in a rich multicultural environment.

New Zealand – Screening New Zealand: Cinema, Globalization, and CAT (UC San Diego)

Wellington is an incredible city, full of cultural history, and a huge hub of film culture, eco-tourism, and a meeting point of diverse stories of travel from around the world. We will spend ample time walking and wandering around Wellington and learning about topics ranging from Maori filmmaking and how film history is made and preserved, to understanding the ins and outs of environmental tourism and the impact of the global cinema economy in a city like Wellington. 

New Zealand – Social Science in Context: Understanding New Zealand (UC Los Angeles)

Drawing on social science theories and methods, this program introduces students to the socio-historical and economic processes that have shaped contemporary New Zealand’s society and culture.

Philippines Narratives of Tradition and Resistance (UC Berkeley)

Learn about Philippine history, culture, and society through interactions with Filipino people, as well as selected lectures by leading scholars in the Philippines. Students will be based at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and will go on field trips to farming communities, urban poor communities, indigenous communities in the Cordillera mountain region, and more.

Philippines  Remote Island Medicine Internships (UC Davis)

Learn about healthcare challenges in the villages you encounter and the importance of preventative medicine. Rotate at community clinics and interact with healthcare providers and patients, while learning about the link between clinical medicine and public health.

Singapore – Understanding Economics through Country Differences (UC Los Angeles)

Economics pervades all aspects of life and our day-to-day decision making. Singapore especially functions as a laboratory for the practice of economics, such as in their limitations on private ownership of vehicles to reduce traffic congestion.

Thailand – Climate Resilience in Thailand (UC Davis)

Discover why Bangkok is considered the 'Venice of the East' by exploring the significance of water in the culture, design, and planning of this Southeast Asian mega-city.

Thailand – Designing Programs for Sexual Health (UC San Diego)

Sexual Health in Bangkok focuses on efforts to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS among sexually diverse populations in Bangkok. We will begin by examining broader issues around gender, sexuality, and power in Thailand. We then focus on the relationship between HIV/AIDS and key affected populations such as female sex workers, gay men, and trans women.

Spend five weeks supporting under-resourced students as an intern in a traditional Thai temple school in Chiang Mai, a beloved destination in the mountainous, jungle-filled north of Thailand.

Explore tropical jungles, pristine beaches, exotic markets, and the mega-city of Bangkok while getting hands-on microbiology laboratory experience.

Thailand  Wildlife, Conservation and Veterinary Medicine Internships (UC Davis)

Students will have a chance to live in both city and rural settings and explore Thai culture while learning hands-on veterinary, conservation, and animal science skills.

The overall program objectives are to nurture your growth as an effective, multicultural leader in global business, as well as to increase your knowledge about business and leadership across Asian cultural contexts. In this program, we will place special emphasis on cultural diversity and local models of leading and understanding business.

Austria  Psychiatry in Central Europe (UC San Diego)

This program will focus on the re-emergence of medicine and physiology that occurred during the counterreformation and proceeded in a continuous fashion until the modern period. 

Belgium  Microbiology in Europe's Capital—Brussels (UC Davis)

This program introduces you not only to microbiology as a discipline, but also to the historic laboratories that led to modern microbiology. There will be strong focus on the role of microbes in human disease and our response to them and on the role of microbes in biotechnology, agriculture, and their environmental impacts.

Czech Republic – Global Internships: Prague, Czech Republic (UC Berkeley)

Gain first-hand knowledge, connections, and international work experience through an academic internship in Prague, Czech Republic.

Czech Republic and Germany – Art and Globalization (UC Santa Cruz)

In this immersive studio art class, students create site-responsive sculptures, drawings, performances, and installations that explore art in a global context. Using the rich history and culture of Central Europe as site and locale, the class will travel to contemporary art museums, cultural and historical sites in Prague and Berlin (1 week), then create responsive artworks on-site at ArtMill’s Center for Sustainability, in the Bohemian countryside, Czech Republic (2 weeks).

Denmark – In the Footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen (UC Los Angeles)

Follow the footsteps of renowned author Hans Christian Andersen through field trips, walking tours and hands-on exploration of place and space.

England – The Heritage Industry and the British Empire-History in England (UC Riverside)

This is a special double course about history in London and its relationship with the British Empire and the modern Heritage Industry. As we learn about the city and its development, we will question our assumptions about Britain, its people, and its past, about being in a foreign country, and about life in a world megalopolis.

England – Revelle in London (UC San Diego)

London is a site of extraordinary cultural and historical importance for the three key periods and themes of Humanities 3: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and Early Modern Europe.  Studying these events in London will afford students an unparalleled opportunity to explore historical and contemporary events where they actually occurred.

France – A Writer’s Paris (UC San Diego)

This Global Seminar, “A Writer’s Paris,” focuses on the experiences—and works—of African American writers in Paris, as well as enrolled students’ own journeys in the city as creative writers. During this Global Seminar, we will not only walk the paths of famous 20th-century writers, but also make our own discoveries as 21st-century writers.

France  Exploring Sustainability in Nantes, France (UC Los Angeles)

Explore Nantes, a green capital of Europe, and its journey on becoming part of the climate change solution, and how its citizens actively support their city’s sustainability.

France – French Language and Culture (UC Los Angeles)

This intensive French language and culture program will provide you the opportunity–and the tools–to live in Paris like the Parisians do.

France  French Language, Culture, and Society (UC Berkeley)

Explore the past and present of France, from its rich history to its multicultural present, and examine what it means to be “Parisian” through the diverse perspectives of the communities that call Paris home.

France – International Business and Law (UC Los Angeles)

This program provides a comprehensive overview of conducting business internationally through two courses: 1) International Business, and 2) International Business Law. The International Business course examines how to successfully manage a business in an international context, and the strategies that managers can pursue to capitalize upon the opportunities and mitigate the threats of doing business globally. 

France  Introduction to Biological Psychology (UC Davis)

Examine the relationship of neuroanatomy and physiology to motivation, emotion and mental health, social relationships, and cognition in humans and other animals.

France  Introduction to Winemaking (UC Davis)

Learn the basics of wine making while visiting many of the major French wine regions and accessing many elite wineries.

France  Jazz in Paris (UC San Diego)

Paris (the home of revolutions in art, politics, fashion, food, and more!) was the first region outside of the United States to embrace and promote jazz. We spend the summer exploring how and why jazz was so enthusiastically received by Parisians between the wars and after, and how the music has become a symbol of the potential and struggle for freedom, democracy, and diversity worldwide.

France – L'Anatimie à Paris (UC San Diego)

Paris is one of the best places in the world to study anatomy, how anatomical structures were represented, and how those representations evolved overtime. This interdisciplinary experience will allow for students to connect art, anatomy, science, history, and culture for a richer understanding of the historic and cultural underpinnings of anatomy education, the connection between science and culture, and the influence of anatomic studies on the great Renaissance masterpiece.

France  Medieval Paris (UC Los Angeles)

Weaving lectures, walking tours, and short daily trips into one, this program in Paris presents a two-fold approach to the histories of the kingdom of France in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Examine the modern Muslim presence in France, including immigration, refugee history, and the unfolding political, social, intellectual, economic, architectural, currents in the country.

Greece Artmaking, Community, and Social Impact (UC Berkeley)

Set in the coastal city of Eleusis, Greece (30 mins from Athens) full of history and intrigue, students will have an extraordinary opportunity to create a public artwork in an international setting.

Greece – Mediterranean Nutrition and Food Systems (UC Berkeley)

Study traditional food systems in Greece while experiencing specific ingredients produced in Chios such as honey, citrus, wine, olive oil, herbs, and mastic, an evergreen tree grown only in Chios for its culinary and medicinal properties.

France  Sign Language and Studies in Paris (UC San Diego)

Some estimates claim that one third of the signs used in ASL today are related to French signs. The two languages, however, are not mutually intelligible. Practice with French signs for many basic concepts will enable students to experience how comprehension can be achieved through an implicitly negotiated process of creating bridges between signs of different languages.

What better way to study thermodynamics than in a country that is powered completely by geothermal and hydroelectric resources? From thundering waterfalls to towering volcanoes and geothermal fields, you will experience Iceland in all its intrigue.

Italy  Science of the Mind (UC Davis)

Study Cognitive Neuroscience through the internationally known Department of Psychology at the University of Bologna in Italy.

Netherlands  The Global Governance of International Human Rights (UC Los Angeles)

Gain a deep knowledge of the promises and limits of international human rights and examine the Eurocentric frameworks within which international human rights are discussed and litigated today.

Northern Ireland Leadership in Practice: Co-Founders and Peacemakers (UC Berkeley) 

This five-week study abroad program will examine the role of dialogue and partnership  in the high-stakes environments of diplomacy and start-up companies. Students will meet with leaders across a range of sectors and hone their own communication skills for diverse audiences and contexts.

Portugal – Drugs and Crime: Portugal Drug Policy (UC Riverside)

This program compares the crime policies of the United States and Portugal. Starting in the 1970s, the United States applied harsh policing and punishment to non-violent drug crimes in minority communities. This resulted in the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people, which has had negative generational impacts on minorities.

Portugal  Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe (UC Berkeley) 

Join the European Innovation Academy in Porto, Portugal for an intensive, fast-paced learning experience, where you will learn from venture capitalists, serial entrepreneurs, executives from Silicon Valley companies, and experts from across the globe.

Scotland  Genetics, Pandemics, and Society in Edinburgh (UC San Diego)

Edinburgh’s historic and continued importance as a site for scientific innovation makes it the ideal site to explore a range of themes in the history of public health and genetics. As a center of the European Enlightenment, it was home to important revolutions in scientific thought, medicine, and later, advances in tropical medicine and the development of global health as well as phrenology and genetics.

Scotland – Revelle in Edinburgh (UC San Diego)

Often referred to as “the Athens of the North” because of its rich intellectual tradition in the arts, humanities, and sciences, Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the United Kingdom after London. A medium-sized city with half a million people, it is a mix of natural features, such as Arthur’s Seat; a long political history, best reflected in the Royal Mile stretching from Holyrood Palace up to Edinburgh Castle; and a thriving contemporary city as the capital of Scotland.
